Tinubu Directs Finance Minister to Present New Wage Plan

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to present a new minimum wage template with cost implications within two days.

This comes after a meeting with the government negotiation team at the presidential villa in Abuja. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, assured that the President is committed to accepting the committee’s resolutions and ensuring a balance between government pronouncements and realities on the ground.

The government team, including representatives from the organized private sector and sub-nationals, has been tasked to work together to achieve an affordable and sustainable wage award for Nigerians. The minister assured that all hands would be on deck to present a new minimum wage within one week.

This development follows the suspension of the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for five days after a meeting with the Federal Government. The strike was called to protest the failure to approve a new minimum wage by May 31.
