ABUJA, NIGERIA – Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special welfare fund for Nigeria’s Armed Forces, pledging to donate all his salaries since assuming office as initial funding.
The President made the declaration as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, describing the initiative as a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of military personnel. He directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately set up a dedicated account to support serving members, injured officers, and families of fallen soldiers.
Okay News reports that the fund will specifically cater to wounded personnel, including those who have lost limbs in service, as well as widows, widowers, and children of deceased military officers. Tinubu emphasised that the gesture is a responsibility rather than charity, stressing the nation’s duty to care for those who defend it.
He also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector players, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative once full details are made public.
The move adds to existing welfare and insurance schemes for the Armed Forces, with further guidelines on contributions and disbursement expected to be released by the appropriate authorities.
