President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has approved the creation of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, a body that will coordinate and guide the rollout of the country’s newly enacted tax laws aimed at modernising revenue administration and strengthening the national economy.

Okay News reports that the approval was announced in a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, a presidential aide. The statement confirmed that the committee will be chaired by Mr Joseph Tegbe, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. Tegbe brings more than 35 years of experience from both public and private sectors, including his leadership role as a Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa.

According to the presidency, the Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, Mrs Sanyade Okoli, will serve as the committee’s secretary. Other members listed include public policy expert Ismaeel Ahmed, development specialist Rukaiya El-Rufai, and several technical professionals drawn from various sectors.

The Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, will supervise the committee. He is expected to ensure close collaboration with government agencies, private-sector groups, and other national stakeholders so that the implementation of the new laws reflects broad input and national consensus.

President Tinubu stressed the importance of the reforms to Nigeria’s economic strategy, saying the laws are part of a wider plan to stabilise public finances and stimulate growth. He stated, “These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses.”

He added that the committee will help to create unified implementation across the three tiers of government, noting, “The National Tax Policy Implementation Committee will ensure coherent, effective, and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government.”

The committee’s mandate includes improving inter-agency cooperation, aligning new legislation with older frameworks, and leading nationwide awareness campaigns to improve compliance and understanding of the tax changes.

Chairman Tegbe expressed readiness to move quickly, highlighting the importance of the reforms to wider economic goals. “We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work closely with all stakeholders to support the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust in the tax system,” he said.

Edun also emphasised that the committee will help reposition Nigeria’s fiscal structure. According to him, “With the establishment of this committee, Mr President has not only set the direction but also provided the authority and support required to reset not just the tax system but the entire fiscal policy framework of Government, to deliver significant economic growth for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

The Tinubu administration has, over the past year, enacted several new tax laws designed to overhaul Nigeria’s tax administration and strengthen revenue mobilisation in line with global best practices.
