President Bola Tinubu is set to meet with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday to discuss the new minimum wage for workers in Nigeria. The meeting, scheduled to hold at the Aso Villa, will focus on the proposal of ₦62,000 by the government and private sector, as well as the ₦250,000 demand by the Organised Labour.

This meeting comes a month after the President announced plans to send an executive bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly for passage. The current minimum wage of ₦30,000, set in 2019, expired in April 2024, and labour unions have been demanding a more realistic wage to cater to the economic demands of workers.

The Tripartite Committee established by the President in January failed to reach an agreement, leading to a brief industrial action by labour unions. The President’s meeting with Organised Labour is expected to resolve the minimum wage issue and pave the way for a new minimum wage bill to be passed into law.
