ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign his appointment today as he prepares to contest the governorship position in Bauchi State, signalling a major political shift ahead of upcoming elections.
Okay News reports that his tenure also saw efforts to restore Nigeria’s diplomatic influence, particularly through initiatives like the Regional Partnership for Democracy, which reinforced the country’s convening power on the international stage. The ministry further demonstrated responsiveness in evacuating Nigerians from conflict zones, working in close coordination with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
Tuggar’s decision comes at a time when several other ministers reportedly remain hesitant about leaving their positions to pursue elective offices. His move positions him among the few willing to step down early and fully commit to the gubernatorial race.
During his roughly two-and-a-half-year tenure at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria, Tuggar operated under challenging conditions, notably without appointed ambassadors for an extended period. Despite this, he is credited with maintaining and strengthening key bilateral relationships, while also playing a central role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy direction through the “4Ds Agenda.”
His resignation is expected to formally open the race for the Bauchi governorship, with political observers closely watching how his diplomatic record translates into domestic political support.
