Two Female Passengers Burnt Beyond Recognition as Danfo Catches Fire in Lagos

Two female passengers were burnt beyond recognition in Lagos on Friday after the danfo bus they were travelling in lost control and caught fire, the Punch reports.


Five other occupants of the vehicle sustained several injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Kehinde Adebayo, said preliminary findings done by the agency shows that the commercial bus, with registration number KTU 479 XQ, was coming from Yaba and was speeding when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“ The agency received a distress call regarding a commercial bus that accidentally caught fire at Cane village, Maryland, while on speed. The incident happened at about 2.55pm. Preliminary investigation conducted by the Emergency Response Team at the accident scene revealed that the commercial bus lost control after hitting an unknown SUV and fell on its side and caught fire .

“ Five persons were rescued and attended to by a joint team of LASAMBUS and the LASEMA paramedics. Thereafter, the victims were taken to the Trauma and Burns Centre, Gbagada, for further treatment, while two other adult female passengers, burnt beyond recognition, were recovered by Lasema ERT and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for deposition at the morgue .”

Lagos’ poorly maintained danfo buses are notorious for causing horrific accidents . However,
the state government is working on a plan to phase them out of use.
