VP Shettima Hails LG Autonomy, Warns Against Abuse

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Vice President Kashim Shettima has welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to local government councils, stating it will enhance Nigeria’s universal basic education system.

He warned against the abuse of this autonomy, emphasizing its potential to address financial limitations hindering primary education.

Speaking at a book presentation in Abuja, Shettima assured Nigerians that the ongoing reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu will address inadequacies frustrating universal education in the country. He noted that the autonomy of local governments, responsible for providing primary education, will align administrative units with the government’s educational agenda.

Okay.ng recalls that the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in July granted financial autonomy to the 774 local governments, ordering direct payment of their monthly allocations to their exclusive accounts, bypassing governors.

This development has led to several states announcing or holding local government elections, with 15 states taking action in the last month.
