We Are Cultists, Not Robbers – Robbery Suspects Tell Court

By Farouk Mohammed

Supreme-Court

Two men arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of arms and conspiracy to commit armed robbery have denied being robbers.

Elijah Adeyemi, 37, and Adebola Obafunwa, 27, told the court they were members of the ‘Eiye’ confraternity, but vehemently denied armed robbery charges.

The duo faces a five-count bordering on illegal possession of ammunition, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and unlawful association.

However, the police prosecutor, Insp. Simon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused persons were found with unlicensed 12 rounds of live cartridges on October 27 in the Onipanu area of Lagos state.

He added that they were found in their hideout where they were conspiring to commit armed robbery.

These, he stated, were in contravention of Sections 36, 61 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2001.

When the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, adjourned the case until January 28 for trial, but not before ordering that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody.
