Wike-Backed PDP Faction Denies Planned Jonathan Affirmation

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party, led by Abdulraman Mohammed, denied on Friday any plans to hold a convention to affirm former President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate.

Okay News reports that the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, issued a statement describing the planned convention by the rival Tanimu Turaki-led faction as false and misleading.

Jungudo Mohammed said no such meeting or affirmation process had been scheduled or approved by any recognised organ of the party. He said the party has concluded all statutory primary elections for the Presidency, National Assembly, Governorship, and State Houses of Assembly in strict compliance with the guidelines of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, the Electoral Act, and the party’s constitution.

“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Jungudo Mohammed said.

“We, therefore, urge all party faithful, supporters, stakeholders, and members of the public to disregard such false information, as it is misleading, unauthorised, and intended to create confusion within the polity,” Jungudo Mohammed said.

“In view of this development, we respectfully call on former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from this charade in order to protect the integrity of the democratic process and preserve the credibility he earned while serving the nation,” Jungudo Mohammed said.

He advised members of the public to rely strictly on official channels for any communication regarding party affairs and urged security agencies to investigate the source of the false reports.

The Tanimu Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party had scheduled its convention for Saturday in Abuja to affirm Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate. The Abdulraman Mohammed-led National Working Committee affirmed former National Assembly member Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate on Tuesday.

Goodluck Jonathan has made no official comment regarding the 2027 presidential race.
