Abuja, NIGERIA – Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) has called on the Federal Government to nationalize MTN Nigeria and revoke the operating license of MultiChoice (DStv) in response to renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Speaking during a plenary session on Tuesday, the former APC National Chairman argued that Nigeria must abandon “diplomatic tears” in favor of a policy rooted in economic reciprocity.
Oshiomhole contended that South African businesses are “cutting away millions of dollars” from Nigeria daily while Nigerian citizens are being intimidated and killed abroad. “If you hit me, I’ll hit you,” the Senator stated, urging the Senate to move beyond sympathy and adopt a stance that empowers Nigerian investors to fill the void left by South African firms. He linked the violence to anti-immigrant rhetoric fueled by domestic political tensions in South Africa.
Okay News reports that other lawmakers, including Senator Victor Umeh, described the situation as dire, noting that Nigerians in South Africa are living in constant fear. Umeh called for African Union intervention and potential sanctions, stressing that these are no longer isolated incidents. The House of Representatives also joined the condemnation, warning that the safety of Nigerians abroad is non-negotiable.
