Ibrahimovic

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United will take up the option to extend Zlatan’s deal by an extra year until 2018.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United will exercise their option to extend Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract for a second season.

Ibrahimovic, 35, joined United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer but suggested this week he remains keen to play in Major League Soccer in the future.

“Zlatan’s situation is simple,” Mourinho told a news conference ahead of Thursday’s game against Feyenoord. “He has one plus one. We are happy with him. We are going to execute the option of a second season. After that he can do what he wants.”

The former Sweden international was also at the news conference and, asked about the extension, he said: “For the moment, we haven’t had any discussions. I have a contract that says one [year] plus one.

“I feel good, I feel fresh, I feel in shape, so it will probably be a second year.

“I want to perform like I can do and not waste time. The second year goes automatic after one so, if it continues like this, yes.”

Ibrahimovic has struggled to consistently replicate the form he showed at his previous clubs but, when a journalist suggested that the Swede has not been shining as much as in the past, he replied: “I shine 24 hours. I’m getting older yes, but I’m shining in one way or another but if you want to shine even more I will try to do it for you.

“Once I stepped into the city, the whole city was shining. I feel it shining now 24 hours — even if it gets dark by three or four o’clock. I’m here and I’m having a good time.”
