Garbine Muguruza Beats Venus to Win First Wimbledon Title

Garbine Muguruza survived early scare to win her first Wimbledon titile against Venus Williams, beating the 37-year-old American 7-6, 6-0.

The 23-year-old saved two set points in the first set and coasted to victory in the second which she wrapped up in 23 minutes against the five-time champion under the Centre Court roof.

With this triumph, Muguruza who denied Williams a first major title in nine years, which would have made her the oldest female Grand Slam champion in the Open era, becomes the only Spanish player to have claimed the women’s singles title at Wimbledon after her coach, Conchita Martinez won it in 1994.

The Rosewater Dish is the 14th seed’s second Grand Slam title after her French Open triumph over Serena Williams in 2016.
