Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has unveiled the tactical approach that secured Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash held in Ivory Coast.

Ademola Lookman’s solitary goal proved decisive for the Super Eagles, with Moses Simon’s outstanding performance earning him the Man of the Match accolade. Simon’s remarkable display included a skillful run past his marker, setting up Lookman for the crucial goal that sealed Nigeria’s spot in the semi-finals.

Following the win, Coach Peseiro, who had been tasked with reaching at least the semi-finals to trigger a two-year contract extension, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance. He highlighted the strategic combination of defensive solidity and attacking prowess as key factors in securing the victory.

“We did well in the first half, counter-attacking a lot, and putting Angola under pressure. In the second half, they came to attack us, and we had some difficult moments. Nwabali made two saves,” Peseiro revealed during the post-match conference.

Peseiro specifically commended goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his crucial interventions, which played a pivotal role in preserving Nigeria’s lead. Emphasizing the importance of collective effort, Peseiro reiterated his philosophy of teams attacking and defending as a cohesive unit.

“I want my teams to attack and defend together. Mistakes from the middle caused the clear chance that Angola had,” Peseiro added, reflecting on areas for improvement despite the victory.
