The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a spot in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dramatic semi-final victory over South Africa, clinching their place in the title showdown.

In a tense encounter at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Nigeria triumphed over Bafana Bafana in a penalty shootout after both teams played out a one-all draw through regular time and extra time.

The match marked Nigeria’s record 15th semi-final appearance in AFCON history, and it proved to be a fiercely contested battle that pushed both sides to their limits.

Despite initial setbacks and injuries, Nigeria displayed resilience throughout the match. Striker Victor Osimhen, who had battled abdominal discomfort, made a crucial contribution, while head coach Jose Peseiro was forced to make tactical adjustments due to injuries.

The Eagles started with a 3-4-3 formation, but faced early challenges in containing the pace and skill of South Africa’s attacking players, particularly Percy Tau and Evidence Makgopa.

However, Nigeria managed to break the deadlock in the 65th minute when William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty awarded after Osimhen was fouled in the South African goal area.

A dramatic turn of events unfolded later in the game when a VAR review led to a penalty being awarded to South Africa following a foul in the Nigerian box. Teboho Mokoena successfully converted the penalty, leveling the score and sending the match into extra time.

With tensions running high, the game ultimately came down to a penalty shootout. Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero, saving Makgopa’s crucial kick before Kelechi Iheanacho sealed Nigeria’s victory and passage to the AFCON final.
