The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured that the nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024, will not disrupt the ongoing Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller for Ekiti, made this announcement in a letter addressed to school principals and heads in the state.

The letter, titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC,” emphasized that the exams, which started on April 30 and are scheduled to end on June 20, will continue as planned. Lawson noted that while WAEC acknowledges the concerns of the unions and the public, it is imperative that students are not disadvantaged by the industrial action.

“The conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled,” Lawson stated. She urged school administrators, supervisors, parents, and the general public to ensure that students can attend their exams without hindrance.

This announcement follows the declaration by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to begin an indefinite strike due to stalled negotiations on a new minimum wage. Despite sharing the unions’ concerns, WAEC remains committed to conducting the exams without interruption.

WAEC called on all stakeholders to make the necessary arrangements to support the students during this period, ensuring they do not miss their examinations.
