The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in a landmark case seeking full autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local governments.

The case, marked SC/CV/343/2024, has the federal government as the plaintiff and all 36 states of the federation as defendants.

The federal government is also seeking an order to prevent state governors from arbitrarily dissolving democratically elected local councils.

This legal battle is pivotal in determining the future governance structure and the degree of autonomy granted to local government councils across the country.

The originating summons for the suit was dated and filed on May 20, 2024.

During Thursday’s court session, the attorneys-general and legal representatives of all 36 states were present, adopting their respective processes and unanimously praying the court to dismiss the suit.
