The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has assured Nigerians living in the UK of their safety following recent anti-immigration riots in several British towns.

Montgomery made the assurance during a meeting with the CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja on Wednesday. He stated that 12 British towns have been affected by the riots, which were triggered by misinformation about a mass stabbing that killed three young girls in Southport, northern England.

The High Commissioner revealed that over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the disorder, and 60 special courts have been established to address the situation. He emphasized that the UK authorities are working to restore calm and normalcy to the affected communities.

Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that no reports of harmed Nigerians have been received and thanked the UK for their cooperation. She also reminded Nigerians in the UK to stay safe and adhere to the UK travel advisory.

The riots have affected several cities, including Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester, which have large numbers of foreign students. The UK government has assured that it remains committed to being a liberal and welcoming country for qualified individuals to live, school, and work.
