Nigerian para-powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo has made history by breaking her own world record in the women’s over 86kg para-powerlifting category at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Oluwafemiayo, who captained Team Nigeria at the games, concluded the country’s participation on a high note by securing a gold medal.

The 39-year-old, who previously won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, became the first para-athlete in history to lift 167kg, shattering her previous world record.

In the competition, China’s Deng Xuemei claimed the silver medal with a lift of 155kg, while Egypt’s Nadia Ali earned the bronze with a 145kg lift.

Oluwafemiayo’s remarkable achievement brings Nigeria’s total medal count at the 2024 Paralympics to seven, comprising two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
