President Bola Tinubu has approved the scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development, as part of a major restructuring of the federal ministries.

The decision was made during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, according to a post by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, via X (formerly Twitter).

In place of the dissolved ministries, the government will establish a new Ministry of Regional Development, which will oversee all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

Additionally, the National Sports Commission will now take over the responsibilities of the former Ministry of Sports, marking a shift in how the country’s sports sector will be managed going forward.

In a related move, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, streamlining the operations of both ministries under a unified entity.
