The Federal Government has commenced the payment of pensions and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel, including three months’ arrears.
This development follows protests by retirees over unpaid benefits at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Thursday.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, through a statement issued by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence.
The retired military personnel had expressed frustration over the government’s delay in fulfilling several commitments, including a 20% to 28% salary increment promised from January to November 2024, overdue palliative payments from October 2023 to November 2024, an additional ₦32,000 pension increment, and the bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance.
They also demanded refunds of pension deductions made from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers.
Responding to the protest, Matawalle confirmed that payment processes had begun, with retirees already receiving alerts for their entitlements.
“President Bola Tinubu released funds for the payment of pensions and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel on Thursday,” the statement read.
The minister commended the President for his commitment to the welfare of serving and retired military personnel, noting that the payment of arrears underscores the administration’s dedication to improving their living standards.
He also praised the efforts of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, for his role in actualizing the payments.
Matawalle urged the military to remain steadfast in their duties, assuring them of the government’s ongoing efforts to boost morale and provide support in addressing insecurity.
“In spite of initial setbacks, be rest assured that Mr. President will do everything within his power to uplift our military forces as they confront the challenges of insecurity,” Matawalle stated.
He acknowledged the significant contributions of retired and serving military personnel in ensuring national security and combating insurgency.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to enhance the readiness and resilience of the Nigerian Armed Forces while emphasizing the vital role they play in safeguarding the country.
