The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 29 suspected internet fraudsters in Benin, the Edo State capital.

The anti-graft agency disclosed the development in a statement shared on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, noting that the arrests followed credible intelligence.

According to the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended at an apartment allegedly operating as a “yahoo academy or training school” for internet fraud and related activities.

Items recovered during the operation include six exotic cars, laptops, and mobile phones, which the agency said were tools used in carrying out fraudulent schemes.

“The suspects were arrested after operatives acted on credible intelligence. They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the EFCC stated.

The arrests in Benin come months after a similar raid by the EFCC in June 2023, during which 50 suspected internet fraudsters were apprehended in Akure, Ondo State. That operation, conducted at two hotels and nightclubs, also led to the seizure of vehicles, laptops, high-end smartphones, and other items.
