The Nigeria Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has cautioned officers nationwide against engaging in rights violations and other forms of misconduct.

He emphasized that any actions infringing on human rights would not be accepted and would result in strict penalties.

“No operative should be seen carrying assault arms (rifles) while dressed in civilian attire (mufti),” the IGP said in a virtual meeting with police managers on Monday, according to a statement by Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi.

The Inspector General of Police stated that numerous complaints about human rights violations have been reported through the Force’s complaint channels. He stressed that such misconduct would not be condoned and would attract serious repercussions.

“The IGP also warned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, emphasizing the importance of operating in approved uniforms,” the statement partly read.

“All tactical squads are to ensure compliance with the standard operating procedure, while properly dressed in the assigned uniform for the particular squad.”

The Inspector General of Police also addressed the unauthorized transfer of cases without his written approval, stating that this practice is strictly forbidden. He warned that it would no longer be allowed, as it places undue strain on those involved and hinders timely justice.

“The IGP further emphasized on the indiscriminate transfer of cases without the written approval of the IGP. This conduct is highly prohibited and would no longer be tolerated, as such exposes the parties to unnecessary burdens and delayed justice in their cases.”
