A breath of fresh air for electricity consumers in Lagos: Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) has officially commenced the distribution of free prepaid meters to Band A customers within its network. This significant step, driven by the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme, marks a crucial stride towards bridging the notorious metering gap that has plagued the Nigerian power sector for years.

“This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to enhancing service delivery and ensuring equitable access to electricity for all our customers,” declared Babatunde Lasaki, Eko DisCo’s General Manager, in a statement released earlier today. “We understand the frustration and inconvenience caused by the absence of accurate metering, and we are determined to rectify this situation swiftly.”

The MAF scheme, a cornerstone of the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), aims to provide Band A customers with free meters, replace faulty ones, and seamlessly transition postpaid consumers to the more convenient prepaid system. This initiative operates in tandem with the existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, ensuring a multi-pronged approach to tackling the metering challenge.

“While the current phase focuses on Band A customers, we are committed to expanding the scope of the MAF scheme to encompass a wider segment of our customer base in the near future,” Lasaki assured. “This is just the beginning of a transformative journey towards a more reliable and customer-centric electricity distribution system.”

Eko DisCo has urged all eligible customers, particularly those with faulty or obsolete meters and postpaid customers on Band A feeders, to visit their official website and apply for a free meter replacement. “We are committed to a swift and efficient distribution process, ensuring that all eligible customers are metered within the stipulated 60-day project timeline,” Lasaki emphasized.

Imagine the relief of a small business owner finally receiving an accurate electricity bill, eliminating the uncertainty and financial strain of estimated charges. Or the sigh of relief from a family who can now confidently budget their electricity consumption and avoid unexpected and exorbitant bills. These are the human faces behind the statistics – the everyday Nigerians who will directly benefit from this initiative.

The success of the MAF scheme hinges on effective collaboration between Eko DisCo, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the federal government. While challenges undoubtedly remain, this initiative represents a crucial step towards a more equitable and efficient electricity distribution system in Nigeria.
