Senate President Godswill Akpabio explained that despite Dr. Bosun Tijani’s past criticism of lawmakers, including calling them “morons,” the Senate confirmed his appointment as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy due to trust in President Bola Tinubu’s judgment, okay.ng reports.

Akpabio revealed Tijani’s Senate screening was contentious, with senators recalling his derogatory remark. However, he told colleagues in a closed session that they should give Tijani a chance, trusting that Tinubu saw potential in him. Akpabio stated that Tijani is now one of the cabinet’s top performers.

President Tinubu also addressed the appointment, stating that he faced opposition from close associates due to Tijani’s past social media criticisms. He emphasized that criticism did not negate Tijani’s talent and potential, believing his past frustrations could drive him to contribute positively to governance.

Tinubu said, “Because he criticizes me does not mean he has nothing to offer.” He added, “Maybe his frustration at that time will drive him to contribute more to governance. And today, he is doing that, and I am very proud of him.”

Tijani expressed surprise at Tinubu’s magnanimity, expecting reprimands for his past statements. He noted that when his record was questioned during a prior meeting, Tinubu firmly shut down the discussion.
