Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has urged the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to take an active role in promoting peace and stability amid the state’s ongoing political and security turmoil, okay.ng reports.

During a meeting with the Rivers State CAN leadership at Government House, Port Harcourt, Ibas highlighted the Church’s vital role in guiding society’s morals and fostering reconciliation. He extended Easter greetings, noting the season’s message of hope and unity.

Ibas referenced President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a State of Emergency, which prompted his appointment, and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring order and preparing the state for a return to democratic governance. Since taking office on March 20, 2025, he has consulted widely with civil society, traditional rulers, and local government officials to rebuild trust.

He called on CAN to leverage its influence by preaching peace and promoting unity across all divides. “The unity of the Church is the seedbed for the unity of the state. Where the Church leads in love, the people will follow in peace,” Ibas stated.

He assured that his administration is focused on justice, equity, and collaboration, emphasizing that sustainable peace requires collective action and dialogue.

Responding, CAN’s state leader, Most Reverend Dr. D.E. Kala-Dukubo, called for the group’s inclusion in peace-building efforts and urged the administration to address misinformation and maintain essential governance, especially environmental sanitation, during the emergency period.
