MTN Nigeria has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Abia State Government, formalising a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation, expanding broadband access, and driving socio-economic growth across the state.

The signing ceremony, held in Umuahia, brought together top officials from both parties, including Governor Alex Otti and MTN Nigeria CEO Dr. Karl Toriola, who jointly expressed their shared ambition to build a digitally inclusive and innovation-driven future for Abia.

Okay.ng reports that the collaboration will see MTN Nigeria support the state with initiatives such as:

  • Statewide 3G, 4G, and 5G network expansion for reliable, high-speed connectivity.
  • Affordable device financing for civil servants to enable broader access to digital tools.
  • Cloud computing solutions to boost government efficiency and digitisation.
  • Digital storefronts for merchants in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia and other key commercial hubs.
  • A dedicated Aba-brand e-commerce platform to help local businesses reach global markets at no cost.

Governor Alex Otti described the partnership as a “bold move to position Abia State as a digitally enabled economy and innovation hub,” affirming the state’s readiness to support its success, particularly in youth empowerment, governance, and improving competitiveness.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, said:
“At MTN, we are guided by the belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. With Abia State, this is a bold step in delivering that vision, combining infrastructure, innovation and collaboration to build a more inclusive, efficient and empowered society.”

The MTN delegation also included Lynda Saint-Nwafor, Chief Enterprise Business Officer; Shoyinka Shodunke, Chief Information Officer; and Omotayo Ojutalayo, General Manager, Enterprise Business Development.
