The top leadership of Nigeria’s National Assembly has publicly thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, signaling confidence in his administration’s trajectory amid a challenging political environment.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during the APC National Summit at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, moved a motion endorsing Tinubu as the sole APC presidential candidate for the upcoming election. Akpabio acknowledged the hurdles faced by the President in the 2023 elections but expressed optimism about the future political landscape.

He said, “If this President has done well, isn’t it our responsibility to say so? And if he hasn’t done well, isn’t it also our duty to serve him a notice of impeachment? We are not giving him a notice of impeachment. We are giving him a notice that it was difficult for him in 2023. But in 2027, I see everything turning around.”

Akpabio’s remarks were supported by other key National Assembly figures including Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. The collective leadership praised Tinubu’s efforts to stabilize and grow Nigeria’s economy, which has been recognized by international bodies and appreciated by citizens at the grassroots level.

Highlighting the shifting political dynamics, Akpabio shared an anecdote about a Labour Party senator who sought to join the APC, illustrating Tinubu’s increasing appeal across party lines. “As I was leaving today, a senator grabbed my dress and said, please take me there. I told him, ‘You can’t come now.’ But just imagine, he is a Labour Party senator, pleading to be brought in,” he said.

Akpabio also criticized the opposition, particularly the PDP, describing its structure as fragmented and ineffective. “I went to my state and saw the PDP’s umbrella; it had over 100 holes. Very soon, you will hear the news everything in the South-South has collapsed in your favor.”

He concluded by urging that Tinubu be re-elected as Nigeria’s President in 2027, not only as the APC’s sole candidate but also as the unanimous choice of Nigerians.
