Sunderland ended an eight-year absence from the Premier League after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

The match-winning moment came deep into stoppage time when substitute Tommy Watson curled a precise low shot past goalkeeper Michael Cooper, sealing promotion worth an estimated £200 million in revenue.

Sheffield United took the lead in the first half through Tyrese Campbell’s composed finish following a perfectly weighted pass from Ben Hamer. However, Sunderland fought back, with Eliezer Mayenda equalising in the 76th minute after capitalising on sloppy defending. The Black Cats’ resilience was epitomised by Watson’s decisive strike, which ensured they will return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

Manager Regis Le Bris praised his team’s determination, saying, “This win represents the way we played this season, with resilience and discipline to get back into the game. We tried different options and finally we found the solution.” Sunderland’s journey back to the top flight is remarkable given their recent struggles, including four seasons in the third tier and five consecutive defeats before the play-offs.

The victory also sets up a renewed rivalry with Newcastle next season, much to the delight of Sunderland fans. Watson, who is set to join Brighton in the off-season, described his winner as “unbelievable” and a perfect farewell gift. “The story was written when I came off the bench. I couldn’t have pictured it any better,” he said. “We’ll see each other next year, in the big time!”
