Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, on Friday lauded the commitment of his supporters and reiterated his optimism for Rivers State’s future during the commissioning of the Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way). The event, held at the route stretching from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III (RR3), was officiated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, representing President Bola Tinubu.
Wike credited his political resilience to the unwavering support from Nigerians across the country. “I don’t think there is any politician who is so lucky like me that each time we are doing something in Abuja, all my friends from my state, from your state, from Abia to Enugu, Sokoto and Cross River, name them, they all come,” he remarked, highlighting the unity behind his efforts.
Addressing concerns about Rivers State, Wike confidently stated, “Nobody will look at me and say there is no hope for Rivers State. I don’t see that person and that is the truth of the matter.” He emphasized that his strength comes from the collective belief and backing of his supporters, adding, “If I had come out alone, nobody would reckon with me.”
The minister also assured Abuja residents of President Tinubu’s dedication to their safety and development. “The kind of development you will see under President Bola Tinubu’s administration would be such that at the end of the day you would attest to the fact that indeed, there are people who mean well for this country,” Wike said.
Detailing the road project, Wike explained that the first phase, awarded by the Federal Executive Council in September last year and flagged off in October, is now complete. He expressed hope that the second phase, which will connect the road to the airport, will be finished before the year ends. “I have initiated discussions with villagers on the route with a view to constructing the road and linking it to the airport,” he added.
Senator Akume praised the project as a symbol of visionary leadership, noting its importance in improving traffic flow and connectivity in Abuja. “This road now carries the legacy of forward-thinking leadership into the future of our capital city,” he said.
Akume urged residents to take ownership of the road, which will ease congestion in districts such as Dape, Gwarinpa 1, Kado, and others. “To Abuja residents and indeed all Nigerians, this is your road. Own it, use it wisely, protect it and celebrate it,” he concluded.
