The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert advising American citizens to avoid non-essential visits to military and government facilities in Abuja. This advisory follows recent global developments that have led to increased security concerns worldwide.

Okay.ng reports that the alert, released by the US Embassy on Monday, explicitly prohibits all embassy personnel and their families from traveling to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in the capital unless such travel is for official duties. This measure aims to safeguard American staff and their relatives amid the evolving security landscape.

The embassy urged American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to exercise heightened vigilance, especially in public spaces frequently visited by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials. The advisory also warns against attending large gatherings and recommends avoiding predictable daily routines to reduce vulnerability.

The statement from the embassy reads in part: “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.”

It further advises, “Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent. Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”

Despite these restrictions, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational to assist American nationals. Citizens requiring further information or assistance are encouraged to visit the embassy’s official website.
