The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced that SIM-related services across all mobile networks in Nigeria will experience temporary disruptions. This development comes as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) implements a switch to a new identity verification platform, a move aimed at enhancing the integrity and efficiency of identity management systems nationwide.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by ALTON’s Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, along with Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh, the association explained that the migration to the new platform has presented unforeseen technical challenges. These challenges are impacting the availability of SIM services across the country, affecting activities such as SIM swaps, replacements, and new activations.

Mr. Adebayo elaborated, “The new platform aims to improve the integrity and efficiency of identity management systems. However, the transition has temporarily hindered Mobile Network Operators from offering seamless SIM-related services.”

Okay.ng reports that ALTON is actively collaborating with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues as swiftly as possible. In the meantime, subscribers are advised to postpone any SIM-related requests until further notice.

The association expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to the public and reassured Nigerians of their continued commitment to providing secure and high-quality telecommunications services. Updates on the situation will be communicated promptly as progress is made.

This disruption underscores the challenges faced by telecommunications providers in adapting to new regulatory and technological frameworks, emphasizing the importance of robust identity verification in today’s digital age.
