Empowering Citizens Through Data
The Lagos State Government has kicked off a new initiative to capture the experiences of daily commuters across road, rail, and water transport services. The large-scale People’s Perception Survey on Lagos State Public Transportation Systems seeks to gather citizens’ feedback on how effectively state-run mobility networks are meeting their needs, okay.ng reports.
Collaboration for Efficient Mobility
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Government on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the Lagos Bureau of Statistics is partnering with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and Lagos Ferry Services Company to train coordinators, supervisors, and enumerators who will engage residents and assess the performance of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, Red and Blue Rail lines, and ferry services.
Data-Driven Governance
The training, held at the Debt Management Office, Ikeja, highlighted how information from the survey will enable government to plan more efficiently and address transportation challenges.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, represented by Mr. Alao Akinkunmi, Director of the Economic Intelligence Department, said:
“This initiative shows we are learning, adapting, and evolving to meet the real needs of our citizens. Field officers are the first and most critical link in the data value chain. Their accuracy and professionalism directly influence how effectively the government can plan, allocate resources, and evaluate programmes.”
She emphasized that empathy and trust remain central to quality data collection and urged enumerators to conduct their duties with integrity.
Transport Operators’ Input
LAMATA’s Mr. Ayodeji Adegboye briefed participants on Lagos transport operations, stressing patience and professionalism when engaging commuters. He referenced major BRT corridors—such as Ikorodu–TBS, Abule Egba, and Oshodi—and explained the role of seven-seater FLM buses in last-mile connectivity.
Aligning With Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda
The initiative supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, focusing on traffic management, transportation, and inclusive governance. Since introducing the BRT system in 2008 under former Governor Babatunde Fashola, Lagos has added rail and water transport options to ease congestion for its more than 20 million residents.
