The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of 16 officers over allegations of gross indiscipline and violation of service regulations. The development followed an internal probe that linked the officers’ grievances to repeated failures in promotion examinations and prolonged career stagnation.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the conduct of the officers was found to contradict established military standards. He disclosed that some of them were already facing trial or awaiting disciplinary hearings for various offences.

Gusau explained, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that a routine military exercise has resulted in the arrest of sixteen officers over issues of indiscipline and breach of service regulations. Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues.

“Some of the apprehended officers had been under jurisdiction for various offences, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service.”

He stressed that those found culpable at the conclusion of investigations would face the full weight of the military disciplinary process.

“Upon completion of investigation indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces,” he added.

Gusau emphasized that the military’s disciplinary action was part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty. “The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” he stated.

Cases of internal sanctions are not new within the Nigerian military, as personnel have previously been disciplined for offences such as mutiny, desertion, and actions prejudicial to service discipline.

okay.ng reports that the Nigerian Army continues to reinforce professionalism and accountability within its ranks to sustain public trust and operational efficiency.
