Manchester United defeated Liverpool 2–1 at Old Trafford on Sunday, with captain Harry Maguire’s late header earning Erik ten Hag’s side a crucial Premier League victory.

The tense encounter lived up to expectations as both sides pushed for dominance in a match that showcased intensity, physical battles, and defensive discipline.

Liverpool started brightly, pressing high and creating several chances through Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez, but United’s goalkeeper André Onana produced fine saves to keep the hosts in the game.

United gradually settled and took the lead midway through the first half when Marcus Rashford latched onto a precise pass from Bruno Fernandes before finishing calmly past Alisson Becker. The goal reignited Old Trafford, giving the home fans something to cheer after a difficult few weeks.

Liverpool responded strongly after the break. Their persistence paid off when Cody Gakpo equalised in the 67th minute, turning in a rebound after Onana parried Salah’s shot. The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Maguire rose highest in the 88th minute to head home Christian Eriksen’s corner, sealing a vital win for the Red Devils.

Okay News reports that the victory lifted Manchester United into the top half of the Premier League table, easing the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag after a string of inconsistent performances.

Liverpool’s manager, Jürgen Klopp, expressed frustration with his team’s missed opportunities but commended United’s defensive resilience. Despite the defeat, the Reds remain within touching distance of the top four.

The result marked United’s second league win in a row and their first home triumph over Liverpool since 2022.
