OpenAI has officially introduced Atlas, a new AI-powered web browser, marking a major move into the browsing market and placing the ChatGPT creator in direct competition with Google Chrome and Safari.
The launch was announced during a livestream on Tuesday, where the company showcased how the browser combines intelligent automation with everyday internet use.
Atlas is designed to bring ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience, allowing users to get instant answers, smarter suggestions, and task assistance across any website while maintaining full control over privacy settings.
The browser is currently available for macOS users, with versions for Windows, Android, and iOS expected soon.
With Atlas, users can browse and chat side by side. A ChatGPT sidebar appears on any webpage, enabling them to summarize articles, analyze data, compare products, or complete tasks without leaving the site.
The experience is seamless and conversational, turning typical web navigation into a more intuitive and interactive process.
The browser also remembers where users left off, reopening previous tabs and sessions on request.
This feature simplifies continuity for shopping, research, or planning, making it easy to resume previous activities without manually searching through history or bookmarks.
Privacy and control remain central to Atlas’s design. Users decide what ChatGPT can see and remember, with options to clear browsing history, manage stored data, or browse incognito.
“You can choose what ChatGPT remembers so it can bring you relevant details when you need them,” the company explained, assuring users that all interactions are transparent and user-controlled.
Atlas also introduces an agent mode that lets ChatGPT perform actions directly on websites under the user’s supervision.
During the demonstration, ChatGPT was shown shopping for sunscreen and beach items on Instacart, managing tasks like selecting products and comparing prices. The company said this feature will initially be available to Plus, Pro, and Business users.
In addition, the browser assists users while they work. By highlighting text in emails or documents, ChatGPT can offer quick suggestions such as rephrasing sentences or summarizing key points, removing the need to switch between apps. Users can also customize their browser appearance, themes, and shortcuts.
