A two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos in the early hours of Monday, trapping an unspecified number of residents beneath the rubble.
According to a statement released by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, the incident occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday. The affected property, located at 54 Cole Street near Cemetery Bus Stop, reportedly showed signs of distress before it gave way.
Adeseye confirmed that rescue teams from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the site following a distress call. “It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” she said.
Okay News reports that emergency responders, including officers of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Lagos State Fire Service, were on ground to conduct rescue operations.
So far, 15 persons—comprising seven men, four women, and four children—have been pulled out alive with various degrees of injuries. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations were still ongoing to locate other trapped victims. Authorities are yet to confirm the total number of casualties.
Building collapses have remained a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often linked to poor structural integrity, use of substandard materials, and weak enforcement of building regulations.
In November 2021, a high-rise building under construction in Ikoyi collapsed, killing at least 42 people. Similarly, in September 2025, another four-storey structure under construction in the Yaba district caved in, leaving several people dead and many others trapped.
