Suspected drug barons have attacked operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in Ukpuje town, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The joint team was on an operation to raid drug kingpins when it came under heavy assault from the suspects, forcing the officers to suspend the mission temporarily.

Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed the attack in a statement on Tuesday, describing Ukpuje as a community notorious for cannabis cultivation and drug trafficking.

Ofoyeju said the team was ambushed while advancing through the area, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that forced them to retreat for safety.

He said one NDLEA officer sustained injuries after being struck by a sharp object but has since received medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to him, the joint operation was aimed at dismantling criminal drug networks operating in remote communities and ensuring such areas no longer serve as safe havens for illicit activities.

“I commend the bravery of our officers and the army personnel involved,” Ofoyeju said. “Our mission is to disrupt illegal drug operations, especially in communities known for drug cultivation and trafficking.”

He added that despite resistance from the attackers, no life was lost and security operatives remained resolute in continuing future operations across Edo State.
