The House of Representatives convened a dedicated plenary session on Tuesday to discuss Nigeria’s pressing national security challenges. The session welcomed a high-level delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis, led by Speaker Lanein Blanchette, alongside representatives from the United States Embassy.

Lawmakers used the session to examine a comprehensive Internal Assessment compiled by multiple committees. The report included recent security incidents nationwide, emerging patterns of insecurity, outcomes from legislative oversight, and the implementation status of past resolutions.

Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, Police Affairs, Human Rights, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Women Affairs, Youth Development, and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness delivered evidence-based briefings during the meeting. The House is expected to issue a formal resolution at the conclusion, detailing interventions, deadlines, and oversight mechanisms.

In his opening remarks, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas reaffirmed that Nigeria’s sovereignty “is not up for negotiation,” while highlighting the country’s enduring partnership with the United States. He emphasized the House’s readiness to collaborate with the US government on matters impacting Nigeria’s security architecture.

Abbas also addressed the proposed Religious Freedom Accountability Bill, noting that both Christian and Muslim communities continue to face targeted attacks by terrorist groups. He further expressed concern over recent military coups in neighboring West African nations, describing them as developments that warrant close monitoring.

Okay News reports that the session underscores the House’s commitment to strengthening national security, reinforcing the legislative body’s oversight role in tackling insecurity across the country.
