Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League table with a composed 2–0 win over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. First-half header from Mikel Merino and a late strike from Bukayo Saka secured all three points, stretching the Gunners’ unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side began brightly and took the lead within ten minutes. Clever interplay between Noni Madueke and Ben White freed the full-back on the right, allowing him to deliver a precise cross for Merino, who powered his header into the ground and beyond goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. The goal marked the Spaniard’s fifth of the season and continued his prolific 2025 form for club and country.
Brentford threatened intermittently—most notably when Kevin Schade’s strong header forced a superb fingertip save from David Raya, pushing the effort onto the crossbar. Madueke, making his first start since September, frequently troubled the visitors’ defence and came close to scoring before half-time, only to be denied by Rico Henry’s close-range block.
Arsenal remained in control after the interval despite Brentford’s persistent threat from corners and long throws. Arteta introduced Eberechi Eze and Saka midway through the second half, adding fresh attacking impetus. The substitutions nearly paid off immediately, with Rice and Riccardo Calafiori both forcing saves from Kelleher.
The hosts continued to push for a second goal and eventually put the match beyond doubt in the 90th minute. Merino threaded an incisive pass through to Saka, who shifted onto his left foot before firing past Kelleher to seal the win.
Arsenal now turn their attention to a tight fixture schedule, travelling to Villa Park to face Aston Villa on Saturday before heading to Belgium for a Champions League clash with Club Brugge the following Wednesday.
