The Police Service Commission (PSC) of Nigeria has approved the promotion of 775 senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). The elevations span multiple ranks following examinations and interviews.
Okay News reports that PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General Hashimu Salihu Argungu, oversaw the process. It concluded on December 17 at the commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.
One officer rose to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Assistant Inspector-General Mohammed Usman Gumel, previously overseeing Community Policing at Force Headquarters in Abuja, received the promotion.
Seven Commissioners of Police (CPs) advanced to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs). They include CP Ihebom Chukwuma from the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja and CP Abaniwonda Olufemi from Delta State.
Thirteen Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) moved up to Commissioners of Police. Promoted officers serve in various commands and specialised units nationwide.
Thirty Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) gained the rank of Deputy Commissioners. Fifty-one Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) became Assistant Commissioners.
Additionally, 542 Superintendents of Police (SPs) advanced to Chief Superintendents. 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) rose to Superintendents, while 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) reached Deputy Superintendents.
Argungu congratulated the officers on their new ranks. He urged greater commitment to national service and public safety.
“Promotion comes with higher expectations and urged beneficiaries to rededicate themselves to effective policing, protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order,” the Chairman stated.
He reaffirmed the PSC’s dedication to regular, merit-driven promotions. The process aligns with international best practices for law enforcement advancement.
These promotions strengthen leadership across Nigeria’s police commands and specialised departments. They support enhanced security operations nationwide.
The development reinforces institutional reforms aimed at professionalising the NPF and improving public trust.
