FCCPC Reopens Ikeja Electric Headquarters

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) of Nigeria has unsealed the headquarters of Ikeja Electric Plc. The action follows the company’s commitment to address consumer rights violations.

Okay News reports that FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu confirmed the development. Ikeja Electric signed a binding undertaking to implement remedial measures.

The headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, was sealed on December 11, 2025. Closure stemmed from non-compliance with a directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The order required unbundling a Maximum Demand account into 20 individual accounts. The affected customer endured over two and a half years without power supply.

Ikeja Electric pledged to resolve all referred consumer complaints within set timelines. FCCPC warned of escalated enforcement for any breach under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tunji Bello described the intervention as essential for fair treatment. He emphasised enforcement aims to secure compliance, not punishment.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and that service providers comply with lawful decisions and directives,” Bello stated.

“Enforcement is not an end in itself. Where compliance is achieved and credible commitments are made, the Commission will respond appropriately,” he added.

Bello highlighted FCCPC’s balanced regulatory approach. It intervenes firmly against persistent harm but de-escalates upon verifiable commitments.

“We intervene decisively where consumer harm persists, and we de-escalate where enforceable compliance is secured,” he explained.

The commission reiterated dedication to protecting electricity consumers nationwide. Future violations will trigger stronger measures.

This resolution demonstrates regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s power sector. It balances accountability with cooperation to improve service delivery.

The outcome reinforces consumer rights while encouraging voluntary adherence among distribution companies.
