Pedro Obaseki, a businessman and cousin of former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, has stated that he was abducted and assaulted by suspected hoodlums in Benin City on Sunday. Obaseki said the incident happened while he was playing football with friends at Uwa Primary School, when a group of men reportedly stormed the field and forcefully took him away.
Okay News had reported that Obaseki was seem in a video widely shared online, dragged through several streets before being taken to the palace of the Oba of Benin, where he was compelled to kneel at the entrance.
He said he repeatedly asked his attackers to identify themselves and explain their actions but was ignored throughout the ordeal.
Obaseki described the experience as traumatic and degrading, adding that he was later released and taken to a police station, where senior police officials intervened. He also stated that the palace later denied authorising the action, insisting that those involved acted on their own.
