The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has been thrown into turmoil following reports that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move strongly opposed by the party’s national leadership and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The development has triggered sharp divisions within the party, particularly between supporters of the governor and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The NNPP leadership in Kano and at the national level has openly rejected any plan to defect to the APC, insisting that such a move does not reflect the party’s collective position.

Kano State NNPP Chairman, Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, said the party had made several attempts to persuade those allegedly involved to remain patient and stay within the party in the interest of Kano residents.

While acknowledging internal disagreements, the party’s Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, declined to confirm any planned defection, stressing that the matter is being handled internally.

Party leaders have urged supporters to remain calm, avoid speculation, and continue backing the NNPP as political realignments ahead of future elections begin to take shape.
