At the inauguration of the Senate on Tuesday morning, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, was returned as the deputy Senate president.

His victory is believed to be the fall out of a deal reached between Bukola Saraki, who emerged as senate president, and the PDP caucus of the Senate.

The backing which the PDP gave to Saraki was on the condition that his APC supporters back Ekweremadu for office of the deputy senate president.

Ekweremadu who is a member of the PDP, defeated APC Sen. Ali Ndume from Borno winning 54 votes as against Ndume’s 20.

At the end of the process, Ndume conceded defeat by moving to where Ekweremadu was seated and hugged him.
