Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, is making a bold move toward transforming public transportation in the state with the planned introduction of an Electric Vehicle (EV) fleet under the initiative known as the Abia Green Shuttle Service. The project, expected to roll out before the end of the year, is designed to enhance mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and promote long-term environmental sustainability across Abia.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the state government revealed that the new transport system forms part of Governor Otti’s broader vision to align Abia with global standards in modern public transport. The initiative, according to Ukoha, is built around the governor’s drive to achieve cleaner, safer, and smarter commuting for residents.

“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s broader and futuristic vision for a modern and sustainable public transportation system, which aligns with global best practices, climate change, and environmental sustainability goals,” the statement partly read.

Ukoha noted that the decision to launch a fully electric public transport model reflects the administration’s commitment to move beyond traditional fuel options. “The State under Governor Otti has embraced the future over and above Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Diesel, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG),” he stated.

Providing more insight into the logistics, Ukoha said the government has already begun acquiring 100 electric buses, which will operate across Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. He disclosed that modern bus terminals are currently being constructed in major areas to support the new service. “The first batch of 20 electric buses acquired by the State, along with 10 charging stations equipped with facilities for persons with disabilities, will be operational before the end of the year. A second batch of the same quantity will be delivered early next year, together with an additional 10 charging infrastructures,” he explained.

Okay News reports that the transport reform project also involves the development of new bus stops in Aba and Umuahia to improve commuter experience. The government is also conducting detailed route mapping to ensure the system runs smoothly and efficiently when launched.

Ukoha highlighted that the new transport system will not depend solely on grid electricity, as it will incorporate renewable energy sources for power generation. “The State’s sustainable transport system project will reduce dependence on grid electricity by utilising solar power and battery storage,” he added.

He also emphasized the socio-economic benefits, noting that the new EV transport scheme would enhance road safety, create jobs, and contribute to economic development. “It will enhance road safety and reduce accidents by having designated bus stops, while also creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth in the state,” Ukoha said.

Describing the initiative as a landmark in Abia’s modernization agenda, the governor’s spokesman asserted that the project reflects Governor Otti’s unwavering commitment to building a sustainable future for citizens. “Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and promising. The green shuttle public transport service initiative demonstrates a commitment to modernising transportation, promoting sustainability, and improving citizens’ quality of life,” he concluded.
