LAGOS, Nigeria — The family of Nollywood actor Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke, popularly known as Alexx Ekubo, has officially confirmed that the actor died from complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The family disclosed this in a statement released on Wednesday, providing the first official details surrounding the actor’s death following widespread reactions across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Okay News reports that the actor died at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, after what his family described as a brief but courageous battle with illness.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Son, Brother, and Friend, Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke,” the family said.
“After a brief but courageous battle, Alexx passed away at Evercare Hospital due to complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.”
The official statement comes after news of the actor’s death triggered tributes from colleagues, fans, and members of the wider entertainment industry, many of whom had expressed shock over the loss.
The family said Ekubo faced his health battle with resilience and unwavering faith.
“Throughout this difficult journey, he bore his pain with remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and enduring hope, believing that one day his testimony would be shared with the world,” the statement added.
The family appealed for privacy as they mourn the actor.
“During this deeply painful time, we humbly ask for privacy and prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul, and for all who mourn this immense loss.”
They also said details regarding funeral arrangements would be announced later.
“Further details regarding funeral arrangements and other family matters will be communicated in due course.”
Alexx Ekubo was widely recognised for his work in Nollywood, where he built a career spanning multiple productions and became one of the industry’s familiar faces.
