Ibadan, Nigeria – The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress demanded the resignation of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Sunday, May 31, 2026, following his statements regarding his limited ability to manage local security challenges.
Okay News reports that Olawale Sadare, spokesman for the opposition party, issued a statement rejecting the governor’s claim that federal control of security agencies prevents him from rescuing kidnapped individuals. The party suggested that the deputy governor should complete the remainder of the administration’s term.
The opposition party characterised the governor’s explanation as an attempt to shift responsibility for the worsening security situation. The statement described his remarks as “a height of cluelessness, insincerity and criminal ineptitude,” asserting that state governors maintain constitutional roles in addressing local insecurity.
The political organisation cautioned voters against supporting similar administrators. “Parochial leaders like Makinde pose a grave danger to the growth and development of the Nigerian society, and it is important for the electorate to avoid them in future elections,” the statement said.
The political reaction responds to comments the governor made in the city on Saturday, May 30, 2026, during his acceptance speech as the presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement. During the address, the governor stated he had little authority to rescue kidnapped schoolchildren and other victims because state executives lack absolute control over national security structures.
