Atiku Celebrates Abdulsalami Abubakar at 84, Hails Role in Restoring Democracy

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, on his 84th birthday, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen whose leadership helped shape the country’s democratic journey.

In a goodwill message released on Saturday, Atiku praised Abdulsalami for a lifetime of service, patriotism and sacrifice, noting that the former military leader’s birthday coincided with the public presentation of three books written in his honour, including his autobiography and a festschrift documenting his contributions to Nigeria.

Okay News reports that Atiku said Abdulsalami’s role in overseeing Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democratic governance remains one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history. He noted that the former Head of State chose national interest over personal ambition by guiding the country through a peaceful transfer of power that paved the way for the Fourth Republic.

The former vice president said Abdulsalami’s leadership laid the foundation for Nigeria’s 27 consecutive years of democratic rule, a milestone recently commemorated during the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations. According to him, the former military ruler secured a lasting place among the architects of modern Nigeria through his commitment to democratic governance and national stability.

Atiku also commended Abdulsalami’s continued advocacy for peace, national unity, reconciliation and good governance, describing him as a statesman of rare wisdom, courage and moderation. He said the former leader’s example demonstrates that true leadership is defined by service and sacrifice rather than the exercise of power.

He prayed for continued good health, strength and divine protection for Abdulsalami, expressing confidence that the elder statesman would continue to contribute his experience and influence toward promoting peace, democratic values and national cohesion in Nigeria and across Africa.
