BC Place Vancouver, Vancouver, USA — Australia kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Turkey, with Connor Metcalfe marking his tournament debut in style by finding the net in the second half.
Metcalfe doubled the Socceroos’ advantage in the 75th minute after capitalising on a loose ball in midfield. The Australian midfielder drove forward before firing a low shot beyond goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to seal the result.
Okay News reports that Australia had opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Nestory Irankunda, whose counter-attacking strike gave the Socceroos a first-half lead. Despite enjoying large spells of possession, Turkey struggled to break down Australia’s disciplined defence.
The win gives Australia an important three points in Group D and provides early momentum in their bid to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
