Vinicius Rescues Brazil as Morocco Hold Five-Time Champions to World Cup Draw

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Vinicius Junior produced a moment of brilliance to cancel out an earlier strike from the African champions.

Morocco impressed for large periods of the Group C encounter and took the lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari. The PSV Eindhoven forward latched onto a well-weighted pass from Brahim Diaz, raced through Brazil’s defence and delicately chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker to put the Atlas Lions ahead.

Okay News reports that Brazil struggled to impose themselves against a confident Moroccan side, despite arriving at the tournament as one of the favourites under new coach Carlo Ancelotti. However, Vinicius restored parity in the 32nd minute when he collected a pass from Bruno Guimaraes, cut inside from the left and fired a powerful shot into the far corner beyond Yassine Bounou.

The five-time world champions improved after the break and pushed for a winner, with Igor Thiago, Raphinha and Danilo all testing the Moroccan defence. Bounou, however, remained solid in goal, producing crucial saves to deny Brazil a decisive second goal.

Morocco also came close to snatching victory late in the match. Neil El Aynaoui forced a save from Alisson with a long-range effort before Chemsdine Talbi was denied on the rebound as the South Americans survived a tense finish.

The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening fixture. Morocco will take encouragement from a disciplined and energetic display against one of football’s traditional powerhouses, while Brazil will be expected to improve as they continue their quest for a record sixth World Cup title.

Brazil next face Haiti in their second group match, while Morocco will take on Scotland as both sides continue their bid for a place in the knockout stage.
